CHAPTER FOUR

“Is that Chloe?” Jasmine asked, looking scandalized as we watched our cousin strut her stuff across the nearly deserted square.

“I don’t know how she hasn’t frozen solid,” I muttered. Then, turning toward Davina, I asked, “What exactly happened earlier, with Chloe? Why was she so upset with you?”

“With who?” Jasmine asked, before she turned her attention back toward me and Davina. “With you?”

“We saw her earlier, pitching a three-year-old-in-a-toy-aisle tantrum,” I explained. “Something about her reading got her all kinds of upset. Could she have come back to steal the ball as a way to get revenge?”

“I normally keep readings private,” Davina said, her fingers absently twisting her collection of rings. “The crystal shows personal things, intimate glimpses. But in this case...” She sighed. “I’m not even sure what upset her so much.”

“What did she ask about?” I tried to keep the eagerness out of my voice, but beside me, Jasmine was practically vibrating with curiosity.

“Prom night.”

Jasmine and I exchanged a look, both audibly groaning.

“Of course she did,” Jasmine said, rolling her eyes. “Heaven forbid she ask about something important, like her future career or⁠—”

“—or literally anything else,” I finished.

A ghost of a smile touched Davina’s lips. “She wanted to know who her date would be. The crystal showed me a vision of the evening. I described a tall young man with dark hair picking her up at her house. She and her friends got quite excited, throwing out names, trying to guess who it might be.”

“So, what went wrong?” I asked.

Lines appeared between Davina’s brows as she frowned. “She asked about his car.”

“His car?” I repeated.

“It was odd. But I consulted the ball, and when I told her it was a silver Camry, well...” She gestured toward the front of her tent. “You saw the result.”

I pressed my lips together, trying not to laugh. Jasmine wasn’t as successful, letting out a snort before covering her mouth.

“Are you telling me,” Jasmine managed between suppressed giggles, “that our cousin threw a tantrum and stormed out because her future prom date drives a sedan?”

“The horror,” I added. “I mean, clearly any proper gentleman would pick her up in a solid gold carriage pulled by unicorns.”

“At a minimum,” Jasmine agreed.

“Have you seen her at all since then?” I asked.

“No, but I’ve been quite busy. There’s always a rush for readings on Halloween night.”

“Maybe we should have kept Pepper around a bit longer. He might have been good at running reconnaissance. If Chloe stole the crystal ball, there’s no way she won’t brag about it to her airhead friends.”

Jasmine tore into one of the caramel apples and nodded her agreement. “They’ll cheerlead anything she does. It’s nauseating.”

She all but unhinged her jaw as she took a bite of the sticky treat.

“Nice, Jazz.”

“You girls should head home,” Davina said. “It’s getting late. I’m sure your parents will be worried. Thank you for trying. I do appreciate it.”

I checked my phone. It was almost eleven.

Davina nodded and disappeared into her tent before I could protest.
